Patricia J. “Pat” DeForest

Patricia J. “Pat” Deforest, 70, of West Edmeston passed away peacefully Monday March 19, 2018 in Oneonta, NY surrounded by her family.

Pat was born in Ilion, NY on April 30, 1947 the daughter of the late Robert and Florence Mykel Rood. In addition to her parents, Pat was predeceased by her husband Frederick L. Deforest on September 20, 2011, children Sylvia Deforest, Donna Sweet, Michael Deforest, sisters Gladys Eldred, Dorothy Roberts, brothers Robert Rood Jr, Lawrence Rood, and Arthur Rood.

She is survived by children Laurie A. Goodspeed, Timothy E. Deforest, Susan Schaffer, Jeffrey A. Deforest, David W. Deforest, grandchildren, Travis P. Deforest, Stephanie M. Registe, Frederick W. Deforest, Cody LaFayette Goodspeed, Connor T. Deforest, Aydin J. Deforest, Katlyn I. Deforest, Audrey E. Deforest, Riley A. Deforest, Jason Sweet, siblings, Mary (John) Bush, Ruthie Turnbull, Edward (Linda) Rood, Mykel (Deb) Rood, half sister Betty (Walter) Ketchum, and numerous nieces nephews.

Pat was a lifetime resident of the West Edmeston. She loved her community, and babysat multiple generations of children in her home. She is remembered as a loving mother grandmother, friend and neighbor.

A service to celebrate Pat’s life will be 2:00 P.M. Friday March 23, 2018 at the West Edmeston Baptist Church, with a reception to immediately follow in the Parish House. Interment will be in West Edmeston Union Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Elizabeth G. “Betty” Mumbulo

Elizabeth G. “Betty” Mumbulo, 88, of Edmeston, passed away Friday March 16, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born in Newark, NY on March 13, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Archibald and Zora Welch Caulder. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband William on October 15, 2011.

Betty graduated from Edmeston Central School Class of 1947, and attended nurse’s training in Newark, NY. She married the love of her life, William on December 25, 1949 and raised a family on their dairy farm on New Berlin Road. She was a Nurse’s Aide for many years at Chase Nursing Home, and also spent time as a private duty home care nurse. Betty also worked in the shoe factory in New Berlin, Kraft, and Beeline Apparel in Edmeston.

Betty was proud of her Avon, Tupperware, and Stanley Home Products business’, as well as her Wharton Valley Grange membership, and leadership in the 4-H, Girl and Cub Scouts. She also raised dogs for Guiding Eye, and participated in Otsego County Foster care program sharing her home with children in need. Betty truly enjoyed the time spent with her many friends. She and Bill fondly remembered coffee, tea, board games, card games, and the laughs that came along with it. The memories will be cherished by all.

She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston for many years.

She is survived by her children, David (Rosemary) Mumbulo, Barton, NY, Dennis (Donna) Mumbulo of Edmeston, Gordon Mumbulo of Sidney, Marcia (David) Crandall of Edmeston, and Marvin (Maryann) Mumbulo of Maryland, grandchildren Jessica, Jason (Tina), Ian (Jocelyn), Susan (Junior), James, Andy, Michelle (Carl), Gordon (Patience), Brian, Judy, Amanda (Jeff), Andrea (Mike), Alicia (Jim), Raushanna (Mason), and Marissa. Also surviving are many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday March 22 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Delker and Terry Funeral Home 30 South Street Edmeston, New York. Funeral services will be 10:45 A.M. Friday March 23 at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church with Jeff McLallen officiating. A reception will follow the services at the church. Interment will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery in the spring. Florence L. “Flossie” Bliss

Florence L. “Flossie” Benjamin Bliss, 66, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday March 8, 2018.

Flossie was born on July 29, 1951 in Cooperstown the daughter of Donald and Jeannette Cline Benjamin. She was pre deceased by her father Donald, her daughter Grace, and a sister in law Gloria Benjamin.

She is survived by her husband Keith Bliss of Burlington Flats, her children Michael Bliss of Constantia, NY, Sarah (Frederik) Hooper of Walton, Jennifer (Matthew) Conant of Balston Spa, grandchildren Emery Bliss, Aubree and Parker Conant, and Bryce Hooper, her mother Jeannette Benjamin of Burlington Flats, brothers Timothy (Beth) Benjamin of Gloversville, Arthur Benjamin of VA, Paul (Linda) Benjamin of Burlington Flats, sister Kelly Benjamin of Burlington Flats, many nieces and nephews including Paul, Mitchell (Shannon), Daniel (Jamie), Meghan, Nathan, Brandon and Lillian.

Flossie was a lifetime resident of the area graduating from Edmeston Central School, Class of 1969. On March 12, 1971, she married Keith, and later began a 40 year career with NYCM Insurance as Claims Examiner retiring in 2013. She was a Charter Member of the Cooperstown Assembly of God Church, enjoyed the summer camping with family at Darien Lake. She was also an avid reader, and animal lover who collected angels and lighthouse figurines.

She will be remembered as a woman who loved her family, and gave freely of her time to her children and grandchildren.

Dorothy M. Bolton

Dorothy May Benjamin Bolton, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away Tuesday February 20, 2018 in Cooperstown, NY.

Dorothy was born September 18, 1927 in Burlington, NY the daughter of the late Murray and Florence Stickles Benjamin. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 35 years, Bruce, grandchildren Ericka and David Bolton, siblings Richard, Adrian, Donald, Murray Jr, Orlo, Sidney, Charles, Ada, Verona, Carrie Bookhout, and Mildred Stebbins.

She is survived by children, Patricia , James (Tam), Jack (Gail), Thomas (Demi) Bolton, grandchildren April (Scott) Smith, Daniel (Jody), Mark (Amy), Mike (Jenilee), Jeremy (Megan), Kevin, Ryan Bolton, great-grandchildren Arissa, Avery, Alli Bolton, Anna and Benjamin Smith, Brenna, Bryce, Madison, Rory, Braelyn, Landon, Eliana, and Abner Bolton, a brother Kenneth, sisters-in-law Martha, Jeanette, and Sharon Benjamin, several nieces and nephews.

A lifetime resident of the area, Dorothy was employed with Edmeston Central School from 1958 to 1990. She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Burlington where she taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. She was also an avid quilter.

A graveside committal service will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday February 24 at the Burlington Green Cemetery, County Rt 16 in Burlington, with Pastor Barry Davis officiating. Paul K. Neske

Paul K. Neske, 84, of Oneonta, formerly of Schenevus, passed away peacefully Thursday evening the 1st of February in Oneonta with Dave and Anne at his side.

Paul was born in Ridgewood, NJ on July 7, 1933 the son of the late Frederick Neske and Pauline Kurzenski. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by the love of his life Kathryn Helen Neske on January 25, 2017, and two sisters Frances, and Marion.

Paul wore many hats in his life. After finishing his tour in the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman, he became a police officer in Ridgewood NJ. He simultaneously achieved Master Plumber status, and worked with the family business until moving to Schenevus in 1969. He and Kathryn owned and operated the Schenevus Hotel for many years, and he drove school bus for the Schenevus School District for over 20 years.

Paul was a life long New York Yankees fan, and a an avid RV camper with Kathryn. For 38 years, they traveled the U.S., and then settled the last 11 years in Belvedere Lake campgrounds where they enjoyed the summer months. He liked spending time in the wood working shop with Dave and had a passion for hunting and fishing. His happiest days were spent in his tree stand. Paul was also a member of the Schenevus Methodist Church.

He is survived by his son Dave (Anne) Neske of Oneonta, a sister Vera, a brother Frederick, close cousins Jay (Roseann) Perosky and their children Donna and Tracey of Midland Park NJ,
Sister in law Madelyn (Patrick) Milliken and their children Scott and Kelly Milliken of Oak Ridge, NJ, granddaughters Katrina Torres, Julianna Fairbairn, Veronica Pfeiffer, and many other grand and great grandchildren. In addition he is survived by his distant children that he loved and missed, Paul T Neske SR, and Lisa Pindar, and their families.

Helen P Mockovciak

Helen P. Mockovciak, 84, of Edmeston, passed away on Wednesday January 24, 2018 in New Hartford, NY.

Helen was born on March 30, 1933 in Edmeston, the daughter of the late Julius and Susanna Chczakavitch Pylinski. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband John in 2005, a son Doran in 1974, and siblings Joseph Pylinski, Peter Pylinski, Jan Piazza, Sylvester Pylinski, Mary Ann Sweet, Edward Pylinski, Walter Pylinski, Genevieve Nestved, and Albert Pylinski Sr.

She is survived by her son Dana (Connie) Mockovciak of Edmeston, her daughter Diana (James) Helmer of NC, grandchildren Cana White, Ardath (Kris) Johnson, Brandy Mockovciak, Andrew Mockovciak, Allison Helmer, Helen Helmer, and Matthew Mockovciak, great-grandchildren Emma, Abigail, Isabella, Kohen, Micah. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Helen was a lifetime resident of the area, marrying John Mockovciak at St. John’s Catholic Church on February 17, 1951. She was employed with Kraft Foods for 37 years as a machine operator prior to her retirement. She was a devoted member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Edmeston, and St. Theresa’s Church in New Berlin. She was an avid gardener growing many types of flowers. She also enjoyed traveling to the USS Manchester U.S. Navy reunions with John, and continued attending the reunions after John passed. Helen was active with the American Legion Auxiliary 1311 in Edmeston for many years.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday February 3, 2018 at Delker and Terry Funeral Home 30 South Street Edmeston with Maureen Joy of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Morris NY officiating. Immediately following the services, there will be a reception at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church. Interment will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery in the spring. Robert L. Alcott

Robert Lewis Alcott, 82, of Edmeston passed away at his home on Sunday January 21, 2018.

Robert was born in Masonville, NY on February 3, 1935 the son of the late Russell Lewis and Daisy Greengrow Alcott. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brother Ed, and sister Nancy.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Helen Mumbulo Alcott of Edmeston, a son Robert J Alcott of Edmeston, a daughter Holly Alcott (JoeMortzheim) of MN, grandson Jack Mortzheim of MN, siblings Myrtle Russell, Rusa Dutcher, , Doris Burghart, Ray (Ida), In laws Frieda Alcott, and DaveWilliams. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Bob came to the Edmeston area while employed with Seven States Gas Company, but later began a 25 career as a custodian at Edmeston Central School before retiring in 1987. In addition, he worked for Howard’s Trailer sales a short time.

Bob was a member of the Edmeston Fire Department, and Emergency Squad, as well as the library board where he served a President for 10 years.

He enjoyed collecting Jeeps, and playing guitar. He was one of the original Dutch Valley Boys, and then played with Silver Strings. For a 15 year stretch, they often performed at the Deer Path Inn, and played their music at local nursing homes.

Memorial services will be 12:00 P.M. Saturday January 27th at Delker and Terry Funeral Home 30 South Street Edmeston, NY with Pastor Andy Johnson of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston officiating. Calling hours will be from 11:00A.M.-12:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. Charles Hoffman

Charles Hoffman, 63 of Utica, NY passed away unexpectedly on January 17, 2018 in Utica.

Charles was born in Kingston, on March 6, 1955 NY the son of the late Lansing Myron and Agatha Hoffman. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a son Chuck Hoffman.

Charles loved the outdoors, and horseback riding. He will be remembered as a great dad, and a person with a huge heart. He was always looking to help others.

He leaves behind two sons, Philip and Michael Hoffman, 2 grandsons, Kaleb Hoffman and Matthew Hoffman,  3 brothers and a sister and many nieces and nephews.

Raymond D Greising

Raymond D. Greising, 77, of Burlington Flats, NY died unexpectedly on Thursday January 18, 2018 at his home.

Ray was born on December 7, 1940 in Ulsterville, NY on the family farm. He was the son of the late Joseph and Emily LeMaire Greising. In addition to his parents, he was pre deceased by a son Raymond Joseph Greising in 1973, and 3 brothers Joseph, Ernie, and John.

Ray is survived by his wife Lois M. Lammers Greising of Burlington Flats, sons Thomas (Laura) Digsby of Augusta, GA, James (Maggie) Digsby of Palm Coast FL, Alan (Mindy) Digsby of Burlington Flats, Glenn (Marty) Digsby of Dade City, FL, daughters Loraine Lester (Bill Maricle) of Smyrna DE, Joan (Rick) Loeffler of South New Berlin, Foreign Exchange “daughter” Mabel Inda (Iontxo) of Pamplona Spain, a brother Frank Greising of Maine, a sister Mary Wilson of Oneonta, grandchildren Thomas, Chris, Michelle, Robert, Jeff, Brian, LeeAnn, Andy, AJ, Shannon, Ashton, Brennan, Sam, 22 great grandchildren, and many nieces, and nephews. Also surviving are special friends Rich and Linda Shafer, and Theresa and Skip Paulson.

Ray came to the area from Pine Bush in the spring of 1974. For over three decades, he operated his dairy farm in Burlington Flats. After selling the farm, he began working with Thering Sales and Service of Oneonta selling supplies to dairy farmers throughout Central New York and the Southern Tier. In addition he drove medical transport for A&D taxi in Oneonta.

Ray loved his family, and took any opportunity to attend school or sporting events to watch his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed dirt track racing at the Utica/Rome speedway, or Afton where his grandson AJ raced. He was a devoted member of the Garrattsville Presbyterian Church, and routinely could be found helping to care for the building.

Jazmin Manley

At 1:45 A.M. on January 14, 2018, 6 lb 1oz, 19 3/4” Jazmin Manley was born into the arms of angels at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY.

This beautiful angel is survived by, her parents Carol Johnston and Chris Manley of West Winfield, her big brother Jakob Manley of West Winfield, maternal grandmother Deborah Klingler of Edmeston, paternal grandparents Lance and Susan Manley of Springfield, paternal great grandparents Richard and Kathy Craft of Springfield.  She has many aunts, uncles, and cousins that love her deeply.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 20, 2018 at the Delker and Terry Funeral Home 30 South Street Edmeston, New York with Pastor Terry Brant of First Christian Church of South Valley officiating. Josephine E Colburn

Josephine Elizabeth Jacobs Colburn, 87, of Burlington Flats, NY passed away Monday January 8, 2018 in Cooperstown, NY.

Josephine was born on December 16, 1930 on Christian Hill in Fly Creek, NY the daughter of the late Charles Eugene and Myrtie Thompsons Jacobs. In addition to her parents, she was pre deceased by her husband Kenneth S. Colburn Sr in 2001, a daughter Carol Riordan in 1989, a grandchild Amanda Lynn Walton in 1991, a sister, and 3 brothers.

She is survived by a son Kenneth S. Colburn Jr (Joanne Kighton-Chamberlain) of Mount Upton, daughters Janice Smith (Nick Costello) of Montrose PA, Donna Rowe of Burlington Flats, Rose Walton (Kellie) of New Berlin, Lois Colburn (Dan Miller) of Webster FL, a brother Fred Jacobs of Deansboro NY, a sister Helen Thompson of Fayetteville PA, grandchildren Julie, Paul, Brian, Mark, Daniel, Jessica, Rebecca, Michelle, Monica, Corrine, Ashley, Matthew, 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special friend and companion Louis “Louie” Mayne of Burlington Flats.

Josephine was a lifetime resident of the area. She was devoted to her family, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Many years ago, she and Ken raised goats, and ponies. She was also well known for her crafts which included wind chimes, knitting, and crocheting. Most people knew her for her dishrags, and hats. More recently, she and Louie traveled the area attending church functions, dinners, craft shows, and special times with his family. They also delivered meals on wheels.
